Skaie Knox - Home Jelly

What’s one of your favorite design pieces you have in your own home?

My favorite design piece would have to be our new area rug by Safavieh Monaco Collection.  It is so beautiful and fresh and is the jumping-off point to a new living room redesign I plan on doing in the coming months. It’s a really smart way to begin any decor project, frankly – start with a meaningful design piece that can inspire new furniture and accessory ideas.

Oh, and our dogs love it, too – so soft and “roll-overable” and hides paw prints like a boss.

What is your favorite design trend of 2016?

Hands down, it’s got to be returning to the basics with regards to materials and colors…meaning black, white, woods (mostly reclaimed, of course), brass, copper, quartz (solid colors) and green (as in succulents, herbs, etc.). I’ve always been a fan of color, color, color, but I’m discovering an urge to retreat from that constant energy.

Though my new area rug is chock-full of various hues, they are mostly muted and subtle. I plan to start swapping out my vibrant pillows and accessories and smaller furniture with more subtle, natural materials and colors. I’m not sure how long this toned-down phase will last, but, I’m already feeling a sense of calm.

The good news is…if I begin jones’n for pops of energy, I can do so quite easily with one decor piece here, one there, and it won’t immediately overwhelm the space. I suppose this is my decor ’n design version of the minimalist challenge. Yep, I’m a nerd.

Do you follow any other blogs for inspiration?  If so, which ones?

I absolutely LOVE shannonquimby.com – her repurposed projects and styling tips are so doable and real. I also dig apartmenttherapy.com for inspiration and styling tips, and rainonatinroof.com for fun how-tos, fellow-blogger support and a good chuckle.

Can you explain a recent project you’ve been working on?

After totally making over my workshop, including fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants cabinetry and drawer system construction, I thought I’d dial it back a few notches. I recently crafted some super fun embroidery hoop lanterns that were so easy to make and actually light up with a battery-powered tap light! They’re perfect for any space in your home, but, I’d say they’re wonderful for warming up a cozy nook, bedroom or dorm. You can also take them outside and hang over a patio or in your trees and can even be taken to the beach or lake!

I recently demonstrated the how-to on Hallmark Channel’s Home & Family show. I plan on making more and will be selling them in  my shop.
